October 19th - South Padre Island

Today, we drove thru Brownsville, Texas, ate lunch at El Pollo Loco (The Crazy Chicken) and then drove out thru Port Isabel to South Padre Island. Padre Island is a very narrow strip of land that parallels the mainland from Brownsville to Corpus Christi.

We heard that there was a sand castle building contest at the beach at the Sheraton Hotel. We parked about a half mile away and took a shuttle bus to the beach. Sure enough, there were several dozen "Masters of Sand" plying their trade. Some were cute, some were complex, all were interesting.
